THIS ARTICLE APPEARED IN THE L.A. SUNDAY TIMES ON 10/23/11.

JACK BROWN, SR., THE FATHER OF JACK BROWN, JR., WHO IS OWNER AND CEO OF STATER BROS., WAS MARRIED TO MY COUSIN ROSE.  JACK, SR., WAS CHIEF DEPUTY SHERIFF OF SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY AND A FRIEND OF WYATT EARP WHEN THE EARP FAMILY LIVED IN THAT COUNTY. JACK, SR., ALSO HAILED FROM ARIZONA LIKE WYATT. JACK, SR., HAD ALSO BEEN A SHERIFF IN AZ LIKE HIS FATHER AND GRANDFATHER.  JACK, SR.,  AND FATHER WERE BORN IN AZ.  HIS GRANDFATHER WAS BORN IN MISSOURI WHERE HE HAD BEEN A SHERIFF. HE ALSO BECAME A SHERIFF IN AZ WHEN HE MOVED THERE WITH HIS FAMILY.  ALL THREE GUNS BELONGING TO THESE THREE SHERIFFS ARE SAFE AND SOUND AND IT'S A FAMILY SECRET.  MY COUSIN ROSE BROWN PASSED AWAY IN AUGUST 2011.  SHE WAS 93 YEARS OLD.  SHE LIVED A WONDERFUL LIFE AND WAS BORN A NATURAL BEAUTY.  SHE RATHER RESEMBLED HEDY LAMARR BUT HAD A NATURAL WIDOW'S PEAK AND A NATURAL TURNED UP NOSE.  NOT TOO MANY MOVIE STARS HAVE THAT BEAUTY.  SHE AND JACK KNEW SOME SHOW BIZ PEOPLE IN THE 1930S-1940S AND SOCIALIZED WITH THEM.

JACK BROWN, SR., USED TO CARRY ME IN HIS ARMS SINCE I WAS A BABY BUT I CAN ONLY REMEMBER THAT FROM MY SECOND AND THIRD YEAR.  AFTER THAT, I WAS GETTING TOO BIG.  THEN, HIS SON JACK BROWN, JR., WAS BORN IN 1938 WHEN I WAS 5 YEARS OLD.  JACKIE USED TO GET ALL THE ATTENTION THEN.  HOWEVER, "BIG JACK" AND ROSE VISITED OUR FAMILY FREQUENTLY AND JACKIE REMAINED AT HOME WITH THE NANNY.
THEY WOULD BRING US GIFTS ALL THE TIME WHEN THEY VISITED US.  I REMEMBER THE BIG TUBS OR CRATES FULL OF APPLES AND ORANGES.  HOWEVER, THERE WAS A HUGE CHOCOLATE BUNNY INSIDE OF A GIANT EASTER BASKET WHEN I WAS 5 YEARS OLD GOING ON 6.

I RECALL MY BROTHER JOE WHO WAS ALMOST AGE 3 SITTING ON ONE END OF A WOODEN BENCH AND ME AT THE OTHER END IN OUR YARD WHERE WE LIVED BEHIND THE LANDLADY'S HOME.  WE WERE VERY SAD AS WE KNEW OUR FOLKS DIDN'T HAVE MONEY TO SPEND ON AN EASTER BASKET.  SUDDENLY, JACK AND ROSE ENTERED OUR YARD WITH A GIANT EASTER BASKET FULL OF EASTER CANDIES AND TOYS AND THIS HUGE CHOCOLATE EASTER BUNNY. JOE QUICKLY GOT OFF THE BENCH AND I FELL OFF THE OTHER END WITH WOODEN SLIVERS ON MY RIGHT KNEE.  JACK BROWN SAW WHAT HAPPENED, PICKED ME UP IN HIS ARMS AND CARRIED ME INSIDE THE HOUSE.  HE ASKED MY MOTHER IF SHE HAD RUBBING ALCOHOL.  MOTHER ALWAYS HAD THE STANDARDS IN THOSE DAYS; RUBBING ALCOHOL, CASTOR OIL, CASTORIA AND MUSTARD PATCHES FOR MY FATHER'S RHEUMATISM. THE ALCOHOL HURT MORE THAN THE SLIVERS. ANYWAY, I HAVE NEVER FORGOTTEN THAT EASTER BUNNY AND I HAVE NEVER SEEN ONE SO BIG SINCE. OR, WAS IT THAT I WAS SO LITTLE? NO MATTER, IT MEANT SO MUCH TO OUR FAMILY.

INDEED, JACK AND ROSE BROWN WERE VERY GIVING PEOPLE. EVEN THOUGH JACK WAS CHIEF DEPTY SHERIFF, HE AND ROSE ALWAYS OWNED A BUSINESS(S) SOMEWHERE.  I KNOW THEY OWNED A RESTAURANT INSIDE THE MISSION INN IN RIVERSIDE IN THE 1930S AND LATER AT THE SYCAMORE INN NEAR RANCHO CUCAMONGA/UPLAND.
THE SYCAMORE INN IS VERY HISTORICAL.  MANY HOMBRES WERE SHOT THERE IN THE MID-1800S WHEN THE WEST WAS STILL WILD. THERE IS AN EXCELLENT STORY ON THE HISTORICAL SYCAMORE INN ON THE INTERNET.  JACK BROWN, SR., ALSO USED TO TELL OUR FAMILY TRUE STORIES OF THE HOMBRES HE PERSONLLY SAW HANGED FROM A TREE HERE AND THERE. THERE WERE PLENTLY OF WILLING VIGILANTES BACK THEN.

MY MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER RAISED ROSE BROWN AS A CHILD WHEN SHE LIVED IN CUCAMONGA ON ETIWANDA AVENUE.  RANCHO CUCAMONGA WAS THE ORIGINAL NAME BUT SOON PEOPLE JUST CALLED IT CUCAMONGA FOR SEVERAL YEARS.  IN CUCAMONGA IS WHERE JACK BROWN, SR., AND HIS SIDEKICK SHERIFF FRANK OLIVAS MET ROSE AND MY AUNT LORETTA.  BOTH OF THESE SHERIFFS WERE 30 AND 31 YEARS OLDER THAN THESE YOUNG BEAUTIES.  GRANDMOTHER WAS LORETTA'S MOTHER AND ROSE WAS HER GRANDDAUGHTER BY ANOTHER DAUGHTER WHO DIVORCED HER HUSBAND.

I NEED TO BUY A BOOK ENTITLED "THE EARP CLAN" BY NICHOLAS CATALDO WHICH I HAVEN'T READ YET.  MY BROTHER JOE HAS IT AND SAYS THAT JACK BROWN'S NAME IS MENTIONED IN IT.  I AM CURIOUS.

INCIDENTLY, WHEN JACK BROWN, SR., WAS BUYING UNIMPROVED LAND IN THE 1930S-1940S, ROSE QUESTIONED WHY HE WAS BUYING SO MUCH OF IT.  HE TOLD HER THAT SOME DAY IT WOULD COME IN HANDY.  TODAY, JACK BROWN, JR., HAS SOME OF HIS STATER BROS. MARKETS SITTING ON SAID LAND, I WAS TOLD.

IN REMEMBERING RANCHO CUCAMONGA WHICH CHANGED OWNERS SEVERAL TIMES, NEXT TO IT ON THE WEST SIDE WAS RANCHO SAN JOSE.
