RANCHO LAS MARIPOSAS BECAME JOHN C. FREMONT'S RANCH AT BEAR VALLEY, CALIFORNIA, WHERE HE ALSO HAD TWO MINES IN THE AREA.

MUCH HAS BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT FREMONT AND SCHOOLS AND STREETS AND A TOWN HAVE HIS NAME  AS HE CAME TO CALIFORNIA WITH MILITARY EXPERIENCE AND OTHER TRAITS.  BUT,  MANY TIMES, HE WAS ALSO IN TROUBLE WITH THE U.S. GOVERNMENT FOR HIS BEHAVORIAL PROBLEMS.  NEVERTHELESS, HE WAS A COLORFUL PERSON HERE IN CALIFORNIA, ESPECIALLY WHEN HE FOUGHT AGAINST THE MEXICAN ARMY AND SIGNED THE TREATY OF CAHUENGA WITH GENERALS FLORES AND ANDRES PICO AFTER THE AMERICANS WERE DEFEATED NEAR ESCONDIDO AT THE BATTLE OF SAN PASCUAL.

NOT TO MENTION FREMONT IN MY HISTORY BOOK WOULD BE AN ACT OF DEFIANCE ON MY PART EVEN IF I HAVE NO RESPECT FOR HIS CHARACTER.
