ACCORDING TO THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO), THERE ARE 35.6 MILLION PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD WHO ARE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA.  ONE CAN ONLY IMAGINE THOSE THAT HAVE NO FAMILY TO HELP THEM IN SOME WAY.

DEMENTIA - ALZHEIMERS ARE NOT THE SAME.  DEMENTIA IS A GROUP OF SYMTOMS - NOT A DISEASE.  IT CAN BE CAUSED BY A VARIETY OF CONDITIONS.  AS DEMENTIA PROGRESSES,  IT CAN BE VERY DEVASTATING IF ONE LOSES THE ABILITY TO FUNCTION INDEPENDENTLY.  IT CAN PLACE AN EMOTIONAL AND FINANCIAL BURDEN ON FAMILIES AND CAREGIVERS.

I WOULD RECOMMEND CLICKING ON TO HEALTHLINE.COM AND READING ABOUT DEMENTIA - ALZHEIMERS BECAUSE THIS CAN HAPPEN TO ANYBODY, YOUNG OR OLD.  IT COULD HAPPEN BECAUSE OF AN AUTO ACCIDENT, ACCIDENTAL POISONING, ENVIRONMENTAL CIRCUMSTANCES, BECAUSE OF THINGS YOU EAT OR NOT EAT, LACK OF DRINKING ENOUGH WATER TO FILTER YOUR KIDNEYS, ETC.  YOU CALL THE SHOTS - IT'S YOUR BODY AND NOBODY WILL CARE MUCH ABOUT IT EXCEPT YOU PERSONALLY.

I WAS MUCH YOUNGER WHEN I TOOK MY MOTHER TO A HINDU INDIAN  DOCTOR WHO DESCRIBED HER CONDITION DUE TO "DIMINISHING FUNCTION OF THE KIDNEYS."  I ASKED HIM WHAT WE COULD DO ABOUT IT.  HE TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT COULD BE DONE BUT TO WAIT AND SEE.  NOW I KNOW THAT HE SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME TO GIVE HER A GALLON OF WATER TO DRINK DAILY (128 OZ.).  HIS DIAGNOSIS WAS 15 YEARS BEFORE MY MOTHER HAD TO BE PUT ON DIALYSIS TWICE A WEEK.  I CARED FOR HER ON HER HOSPITAL BED WHICH I PLACED IN OUR DINING ROOM.  AS HER HEALTH  GOT WORSE, SHE BECAME MORE FORGETFUL.  THEN, SHE COULD NO LONGER REMEMBER WHO I WAS AND STARTED TO CALL ME "MOTHER."  WHAT CAN I SAY, IT WAS EXTREMELY HEARTBREAKING. ON THE DAY OF HER BURIAL, I WAS RIDDLED WITH FATIGUE AND FELT LIKE JUMPING INTO HER GRAVE TO REST.

PUTTING MY MOTHER IN A CARE FACILITY WAS NO OPTION AS I DIDN'T HAVE THE FINANCES IN THE FIRST PLACE.  ALSO,  NURSES ARE NOT VERY PATIENT WITH DEMENTIA PATIENTS.  OLDER PATIENTS GET SLAPPED AROUND BY THEM.  I AM A WITNESS TO THAT AS MY MOTHER HAD A FOUR-FINGER IMPRINT ON THE LEFT SIDE OF HER FACE WHEN SHE GOT HOME FROM A LOCAL HOSPITAL ONE DAY.  OF COURSE, SHE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO HER AS SHE HAD DEMENTIA. ALL I COULD DO WAS CRY AND PRAY.  I DIDN'T COMPLAIN TO THE HOSPITAL AS THEY HAD CHANGED OWNERSHIP AND THE NEW CORPORATION WAS NOT LIABLE.  ONE NURSE AT THAT HOSPITAL TOLD ME THAT MY MOTHER HAD ALSO FALLEN OFF THE BED  (TWICE) AFTER I HAD GIVEN THEM INSTRUCTIONS TO RESTRAIN  HER.

ONE TIME, I WALKED INTO THE SAME HOSPITAL AND WENT UPSTAIRS WHERE THE NURSES HAD PLACED MY MOTHER IN HER WHEELCHAIR WITH OTHER LIKE PATIENTS.  AS I ENTERED, THERE WAS A CHINESE NURSE SCREAMING AT MY MOTHER AND WAS SAYING, "SHUT UP, YOU MAKE TOO MUCH NOISE."  MY MOTHER WAS ASKING FOR HER DAUGHTER (ME).
