THIS IS MY SISTER CARMEN AT AGE 28.  SHE AND HER HUSBAND HECTOR AND I WERE LOOKING FOR FATHER KINO'S BODY IN 1955.  THEIR SMALL SON HECTOR, JR.,  AND BABY DELIA ANN WERE ALSO WITH US ON THIS TRIP.   DELIA ANN WAS JUST 9 MONTHS OLD.  WHEN CARMEN GAVE BIRTH TO DELIA ANN, HER HEART STOPPED AND HER HUSBAND CALLED ME AT MY HOME TO COME DOWN TO THE HOSPITAL TO HELP HIM NAME THE BABY.  HE NAMED HER DELIA AND I ADDED ANN.  WHEN CARMEN GAVE BIRTH TO HER SON (FIRST BORN) SHE WAS TOLD NOT TO HAVE ANY MORE CHILDREN BECAUSE OF HER DAMAGED HEART VALVE (AORTA).  THEY TOLD HER THAT MOST LIKELY SHE HAD RHEUMATIC FEVER AS A BABY WHICH DAMAGED THE HEART VALVE.  HOWEVER, SHE AND HER HUSBAND DECIDED TO HAVE TWO MORE CHILDREN.   WE LOST HER AT AGE 59.

IN 1955, I FOUND MYSELF IN MAGDALENA, SONORA, MEXICO, ON VACATION. I WAS EXCITED AS THIS WAS MY FIRST TRIP SOUTH OF THE BORDER. IT DIDN'T MATTER THAT MY ANCESTORS HAD COME TO THE NEW WORLD IN THE MID 1500'S FROM A VILLAGE NEAR LEON, SPAIN, AND THEN DISCOVERED SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO, AS I DIDN'T YET KNOW MY FATHER'S FAMILY HISTORY.  BESIDES IT WASN'T UNTIL 1980 THAT I STARTED TO RESEARCH SPANISH/MEXICAN HISTORY. FIRST, I STARTED WITH OLVERA STREET IN LOS ANGELES.

ONE DAY, I WALKED INTO THE CASA AVILA AT THE OLD PUEBLO OF LOS ANGELES, CA AND TALKED TO THE DOCENT THERE.  I TOLD HER I WAS INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT SPANISH/MEXICAN HISTORY AND SHE ASKED IF I WANTED TO WORK THERE.  I TOLD HER I COULD WORK PART-TIME ON SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS BUT THAT I HAD A JOB TO GO TO DURING THE WEEK.  SHE GAVE ME A WORK APPLICATION WHICH I PROMPTLY FILLED OUT.  SHE GAVE THE FORM TO THE HEAD HISTORIAN AND I WAS HIRED.  TO ME THE ADOBE HOUSE WAS COZY AND I WISHED I LIVED THERE.  I THEN LEARNED THAT OLVERA STREET HAD A HISTORICAL CLUB THAT GAVE FREE WALKING TOURS TO TOURISTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD.  WHEN I JOINED THE CLUB TO DO VOLUNTEER WORK, I LEFT THE PAYING JOB AT THE CASA AVILA BECAUSE I LOVE TALKING TO PEOPLE AND TEACHING THEM ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE AREA.  MY VOLUNTEER WORK ON WEEKENDS CONTINUED FOR SEVERAL MORE YEARS AND I WAS ALSO BOARD SECRETARY IN CHARGE OF THE MINUTES.  A FEW MONTHS AGO, I RESIGNED TO FOCUS ON MY OWN HISTORICAL NEWSLETTER, OTHER WRITINGS, OUR PERSONAL LIVES AT HOME AND THE RANCH.  I FEEL I STILL HAVE MUCH TO ACCOMPLISH.

IN THE MEANTIME, LET US CONTINUE MY VERY INTERESTING TRIP TO MAGDALENA.  APPARENTLY, FATHER KINO'S REMAINS WERE LOST FOR MANY YEARS AMONG THE RUINS OF THE (TO BE CONTINUED).
